Current Episodes
Episode 61 -Deuteronomy 19 - An Eye for an Eye, A Tooth for a Tooth
Whether it be pursuing dreams, aspirations, relationships with family, time, or wealth, if these important parts of our life should give us excuse to neglect God then some serious evaluation should take place. If we are not in relationship with God, then all could be lost.

Episode 60 - Deuteronomy 18 - A Prophet Like Me The Levitical priesthood was in partnership with their community. Like pastors in the church today they relied on the reciprocal gifts of the people of Israel. They separated themselves from diviners and spell casters in being accountable to their people. Moses tells of another prophet who will arise like himself. Might this be Jesus who begin a kingdom greater than Israel?

Episode 59 - Deuteronomy 17 - They Became Worthless to Me A fair system of justice and godly political leadership was instituted from the beginning of Israel’s nationhood. The ideals of Moses for the foundation of ancient courts, appeals, and kingship would guarantee equitable treatment of others and a nation who remained in fellowship with the Lord, correct? The prophet Jeremiah answers this question.

Episode 58 -Deuteronomy 16 - Festival of Passover, Weeks, Booths
Our need for the Sabbath rhythm is proclaimed in the celebration of God’s blessings in three large festivals a year for Israel. Passover, Pentecost, and Temporary Shelters are to be celebrated annually, marking God’s provision and blessings in the past, present, and future. These celebrations are intentionally inclusive of the foreigner, orphan, and the widow. They also will frame the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth.

Episode 57 -Deuteronomy 15:12-23 - Slavery, Servitude and Freedom
Manumission was practiced in the entire ancient near east at the time of Moses. However, Moses began to change the institution of slavery and indentured service, uplifting the dignity of human kind.

Episode 56 -Deuteronomy 14:22-15:11 - Tithing and Debt Management in Ancient Israel
The original practice of tithing and forgiving the debts of others is flexible and gracious. “You will lend to many nations, but you will borrow from none”.

Episode 55 -Deuteronomy 14:1-21 - The Moses & Peter Diet
Could the distinctions between clean and unclean dietary codes be purely arbitrary? Might they remind us of God’s grace? And why does the New Testament then change some of the dietary rules? Is there a contradiction here or a compliment to the work of Christ?

Special Episodes Periodically, we produce special episodes of the Westside Cafe on topics related to our studies.
The great opportunity of all Christians is to know the Word of God. The saddest part of contemporary Christianity is that so many people squander their chance to do this. Let’s look at a comparison. After hundreds of years of inbreeding, domestic turkeys (the kind raised on farms) aren’t the most intelligent animals. In fact, they’re so dumb that farmers have to take special precautions with them.
Apparently, unless a farmer puts the turkey’s head directly onto its food, the turkey won’t see it. These birds can starve to death surrounded by mountains of food. People of faith, unfortunately, tend to be like turkeys. We are surrounded with the most amazing food – the Word of the living God. How many of us starve to death spiritually, in spite of this?
Westside Café is dedicated to helping people feast on the riches of God’s Word. Don’t be turkey! Eat the spiritual bread that is spread before you in God’s Bible.
“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” Romans 10:14-15.
“Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching,” 1 Timothy 4:13.
In the Westside Café blog you will see the commentary and application. We welcome your comments and questions.
Are Dietary Holiness Codes Arbitrary?
Peter voices that he will never touch these obscene and ritually impure animals. However God tells Peter that He has now declared them ritually pure. This jives with Mark 7 where Jesus teaches it is what comes out of a person's heart which really makes them unclean, not what food is consummed.

The Christmas Special, "Why Mary?
Originally we planned on just presenting a straight forward birth narrative of Jesus from the N.T. However I thought it might attract more interest to listeners if I could manage to try and fill in a few blanks about Mary's feelings toward raising Jesus without being sacrilegious in any way toward her.
